Networking, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Lifelines

Your network is kind of like the lifelines in the game show who wants to be a Millionaire. Life throws up questions and obstacles. You can reach out and connect with others for help and insight into unfamiliar arenas or areas where you might be unsure. Your success in that reach out is the diversity of your network, to some extent the size of it, but most importantly on how willing the people on the other end of it are willing to pick up your call. Unlike on TV that amazing ability to tap into others is available every single day. The more robust your lifeline bench is the better you can work through life’s obstacles. It is not usually as dramatic as the clock beating down on a final answer but the positive impact on your life can be even bigger over time. Early in my career I spent zero time thinking about any of this but as you grow as a leader this becomes increasingly important. Especially the relationship side of it. You must understand the other person and what they ar...

Hell on Earth

Image
One of the most haunting and impactful things I have ever heard in my life was; "Hell on earth is the moment you meet the man you could have been." There is an accountability for how you spent your time in that thought. A true up of all your macro and micro choices. A reflection only you can see. I sit with that thought a little bit each day. In the hopes that when we finally meet, we will recognize each other. It reminds me to constantly keep a clear a vision of who I am and who I want to be. What is important? What brings me peace? Who will be my legacy? It reminds me to make peace with my past. I cannot change those things, but I can learn from them and use them as fuel to be better. It reminds me to act. To become better takes effort, risk, and consistency. It is uncomfortable. It is vulnerable. It reminds me to be brave in the finitude of time. It reminds me to touch and inspire that potential in others. How will you feel when you come face to face with the person...

10 - 10 - 10 Decision Making

On of the best light weight tools I have seen for decision making is the 10 - 10 - 10 method.  Think or write down how this decision will impact you in the next 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years.  It is a good pause to give you space to think about 1st and 2nd order consequences. Too often we just do what is comfortable in the moment or follow the path of least resistance rather than how will this affect our long game.  This simple reminder 10 - 10- 10 can stop you long enough to think about more than just the immediacy of what is in front of you.

What 1% Better Really Means

Image
I remember the first time I heard that if you just improve 1% every day you will be 37X better than where you started at the beginning of the year.  But what does that mean?  Our calendar day is 1440 minutes.  1% of that is 14.4 minutes(Lets just round up to 15 minutes) What do you want to improve or get better at? Schedule 15 minutes to focus on just that thing everyday and let habit and consistency do the rest.  You will be amazed at where a year can take you.  Pro tip you can get better at more than one thing.  Pro tip schedule this time for your weeks well in advance. If you don't schedule it first it won't get done.
